How to layer necklaces

Layering works best with a simple formula: three lengths, one metal tone, and one piece that leads.

The three-length formula

  1. Start close. A fine chain that sits right at the collarbone, like the Meridian Pearl Clavicle Chain.
  2. Add warmth in the middle. A bead strand a little longer, like the Ember Agate Bead Strand.
  3. Finish with a point of light. A single pendant falling lowest, like the Aurora Opal Necklace.

Frequently asked

How many necklaces should I layer?

Two or three is the easiest place to start — a collarbone chain, a mid-length strand and a pendant.

Can I mix pearls and gemstones?

Yes. Pearls, agate, amethyst and opal layer well together when the metal tone stays the same.

How do I stop layered necklaces from tangling?

Leave clear space between lengths and mix textures — a bead strand next to a fine chain moves less than two identical chains.
