Jewelry care

How to care for pearl jewelry

Pearls are organic gems, so they respond to how they are worn and stored. These six habits keep freshwater and baroque pearls glowing for years.

Six habits

  1. Put pearls on last. Let perfume, hairspray and lotion settle first — they can dull the surface.
  2. Wipe after wearing. A soft, dry cloth removes skin oils before you put them away.
  3. Store each piece on its own. Harder stones and metal can scratch pearls; a soft pouch or its own compartment is best.
  4. Keep them away from water and chemicals. Take pearls off before swimming, showering or cleaning.
  5. Lay strands flat. Hanging a bead strand for long periods can stretch the thread.
  6. Wear them. Pearls kept in a drawer for years can dry out; regular wear keeps their luster.

What about the metal?

Most DesignSino pieces are 925 sterling silver with 18k gold plating. Wiping gently after wear and storing pieces dry and separately also protects the plating.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Can I clean pearls with jewelry cleaner?

Avoid chemical and ultrasonic cleaners. A soft, dry cloth after wearing is enough for everyday care.

Why do pearls need to be put on last?

Perfume, hairspray and lotion can dull a pearl's surface, so let them settle before putting pearls on.

How should I store pearl earrings?

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or its own compartment so harder stones and metal cannot scratch the pearls.
